REMEMBER: AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION IS WORTH A POUND OF CURE
Mosquitoes are not only a nuisance, they also present potential health hazards to humans and animals. There are positive steps you the homeowner can take to reduce this menace, since many generations of mosquitoes can breed right in your own yard.
Malathion is the recommended insecticide most commonly used by homeowners for long-term control of mosquitoes outside the home. Spray mosquito roosting areas, and follow a regular spraying program. Spray where mosquitoes rest during the heat of the day--in the cool leafy shade of shrubs, bushes, vines, flowers and in patches of tall grass and weeds. Also spray sheltered surfaces outside the home such as roof eaves, breezeways, garages and the ceilings and screens of porches.
Use a pressurized spray can containing 0.1% pryrethrin or .5% to 1% dichlovos (DDVP, Vapona) for a quick knockdown at parties or outdoor cookouts. All 3 insecticides are approved by the EPA and are available through most hardware stores, garden and farm supply centers. Spray the mist lightly between tables and chairs.
Use insect repellent containing DEET in the back woods and in the back yard, and choose the right amount of DEET to match the time spent outdoors.
Please remember to take the necessary precautions to protect children and animals and follow all label instructions carefully.
